![]() The song wasn’t current at the time of the dance, and probably that’s why if I imagine a Junior High dance today, I assume that the same songs are probably being played. At that moment, I truly wanted to go, but I could appreciate what it would mean for a guy to decide that it was worth staying, even if the trouble could be double. It’s probably the first time I ever heard that song, and no, it didn’t change my world, but I remember wondering if he stayed or not. The music was more or less a blur, the only song I clearly remember is the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” (I think “Rock the Casbah” was played as well, but it’s a fuzzier memory). So, I spent the evening sitting on the edges of the cafeteria, avoiding eye contact, and drinking cans of supermarket soda. But honestly, in 1987, I didn’t really have any friends to speak of, and the other geeks I was starting to meet at school had better sense than to actually go to a school dance. ![]() Mind you, for most people going to a dance would involve possibly a date, or maybe a female acquaintance to sway with awkwardly. ![]() Periodically, she would have these moments when she would attempt to push me into normal social situations, and apparently, a dance was one of them. When I was in Junior High, I attended one school dance.
